“Lori asked her neighbor and learned the heartbreaking truth. This used to be her house”
Her story was shared by The Dodo, thanks to Valentina (editor), who walked us through how it all went down. Luna's previous family moved out and left her behind, and she had no idea where they had gone. So she did the only thing that made sense to her - she waited. She pawed at the glass doors and windows every day, hoping to see her family so they would let her in. What she found instead was Lori and her two senior pets, whom she was nervous would not get along with Luna.

Lori already had her hands full with her pets and probably a mountain of moving boxes (I'm sure her senior cat had a field day with all those empty boxes up for grabs), so she started feeding Luna outside.
“Luna also seemed really content outside”
She started by building her an insulated shelter outside and feeding her daily. Then she kept feeding her, for months, and somewhere along the way Luna stopped being “that cat by the door” and became her cat. Eventually Lori opened the door for good, and Luna strolled right back into the home she never gave up on.

Why do cats instinctively return to their old homes?
For once in my life, I get a simple question to answer. Cats are territorial, and many bond with their home turf (the house, the yard, the sunny spot in the living room window) just as much as to their hoomans. When that territory suddenly changes hands, some cats simply keep showing up because, as far as they're concerned, nobody asked them if they wanted to move!
This is why vets and shelters often recommend keeping a cat indoors for a few weeks after a move, so they learn the new place is home. And if you truly can't take your cat with you, don't let them end up like Luna. Not every Luna finds a Lori, even though they all deserve one.

Naturally, when the internet heard about Luna's story, they lost it (it's me, I'm the internet).
"Luna standing up at that window, still hoping someone would come back for her, broke my heart" - @pawstalesdaily
Everyone gathered together to root for Luna and Lori, and it seems like their wishes came true. Lori gave Luna 5 purrfeclty ameowzing years in that house, where she refused to leave.

Lori's story doesn't end there! Inspired by their time together, Lori now volunteers with the San Diego Humane Society to help more animals in need. Luna's love continues to make a difference, even after she's gone.
